Buckthorn
Scientific name: Hyppophae rhamnoides
Family: Elaeagnaceae
What is behind this remarkable ingredient? Sea Buckthorn
Native from the Northern areas where the climate is « extreme », the sea buckthorn is a very resistant thorny bush which little acidic orange berries grow around branches. It is a real concentrate of vitamins and active ingredients. Sea buckthorn contains more than 108 bioactive elements (vitamins A, C and E; omega 3, 6, 7, and 9) in this respect is acts like a genuine anti-contamination shield.
Harvest
Picking up the fruit by hand can be a very tricky activity as the fruits are surrounded by fierce thorns. So the branches that bare the fruits are frozen, and then put in a vibrating machine. The berries easily detach from the branches and can be collected. Manual harvest is a much more tedious activity: experienced harvesters cannot collect more than 1,5 kg clean fruits per hour.
Did you know?
Soviet scientists, during the spatial conquest in the 50’s, studied this plant very closely. Actually cosmonauts use to apply sea buckthorn based cream on their face to protect themselves from cosmic radiations.
Nowadays studies are still underway in Northern America around this fruits’ properties which vitamin C concentration is 5 times higher that kiwi’s and 30 times higher that orange’s!
Sea buckthorn oil is used because it has properties that protect membrane phospholipids (first one to be attacked during external aggressions such as contamination). It is also a repairing agent as the omega-7 it contains gives it unique properties to regenerate cells (hence it is used in some clinics to cure severe burn victims’ skin).
