Maple

Scientific name: Acer saccharum
Family: Aceraceae

Known for its resistance to very low temperatures, sugar maple sap is one of the most ancient natural products used for medicinal purposes. It has a high content in micro-nutrients and organic acids that contribute to maintaining efficiently the skin hydration and to boosting cell metabolism.

The core of the maple is renowned for its high resistance to cold weather; it is where a rich and concentrated element takes roots: maple sap. It contains active molecules that regulate water flux in the plant and that will, following the same process, hydrate the skin.

Harvest
Trees will not be harvested until they have reached about 40 years of age. It is in spring, when temperature is above 0 during the day, whilst remaining negative at night that harvest will start: the daily cycle created by freezing/unfreezing will pump maple water from the roots and that will be collected through the holes made in the trunks. One of the Quebec inhabitants’ favourite traditions is to have a meal, with family or friends, eating maple syrup in a « sugar house ». Those houses are located in the maple bushes, where maple water is transformed in syrup.

Did you know?
Maple, that survives harsh winters, is the emblem of Canada. In this regard, a maple leaf is on the national flag. Then, when spring comes, it generously offers its sweet sap. Finally in autumn it turns forests in a magnificent cascade of gold and fire.
American Indians, have collected maple sap for centuries, it use to be the most needed source of sugar in their alimentation. Mixed to water, it also was a drink. Nevertheless, recent analyses have shown an even greater value. The fact of containing oligoelements, organic acids and phenol gives it amazing hydrating and stimulating properties.

Sugar maple extract is rich in carbohydrates (nearly 70 % of its composition): simple sugars (fructose, glucose and sucrose…) but also polysaccarhides. As a topical application, it creates a protective layer that stops skin evaporation and keeps it moist. Organic acid can also be found, the famous fruit acids (AHA) a light exfoliant with hydrating virtues that soften skin and brighten the face ; as well as minerals needed for regulating cells activity.
